Amsterdam's newest
Sauna & Ice Bath studio

About US

The idea for Cold Club started in mid-winter, oddly enough. We decided to brave the seriously chilly (and dirty) Amstel water for the first time one Sunday morning. We were shocked, then revitalised, then felt so alive on exiting the water. So started a journey of cold showers, hot saunas, ice baths and deep diving into the research behind why we felt so good.

We won’t bore you with that now though. Looking around, we didn’t feel represented by a wellness industry focussed on beige & cream environments set up for the elite. Where is the fun? Calming and relaxed, sure. But fun? A place that reflects the immense energy you get after your hot & cold session? A place you can bring your group of friends, or make new ones? A place that doesn’t judge you for who you are. That’s Cold Club.

CLASSES

Beginners

We know it’s scary. We know getting in ice cold water goes against what your body naturally thinks is a smart idea. That’s why every Tuesday and Thursday at 18.00 we run a beginners workshop for first-timers. Receive an intro to breathwork, understanding the effects of contrast therapy before jumping in where we’ll be right beside you to talk you through it. Maybe even a hand hold if you’re lucky.

FAQ

YOUR SESSION

Is hot/cold therapy safe for everyone?

Almost everyone can safely enjoy a sauna. Individuals with certain health situations (like heart problems, high blood pressure, circulation conditions, or pregnancy) are advised not to, or to speak to their doctor first. Our age limit is 18.

How long should I stay and rotate between the sauna/ice bath?

Typically sauna sessions last between 5-10 minutes. Ice baths are 1-2 minutes for beginners and 3-5 minutes for more experienced plungers. Our recommended combination for the 30 minute slot is: 5 minute sauna, 2 minute ice bath; 8 minute sauna, 2 minute ice bath; 10 minute sauna, 3 minute ice bath. If at any point you’re feeling uncomfortable or anxious then take some time, it’s okay to do less than we advise.

How should I prepare for a session?

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, avoid heavy meals beforehand, and bring a towel and water bottle. Removing jewellery is also recommended.

What should I wear?

Our sauna and ice bath area is clothed, so please bring your trunks or bathing suit with you and change in our changing rooms. Also bring your own towel. We have one clothing-free day: on Wednesdays we wear nothing. We have towels and sauna hats available for hire at the studio.

How often should I go to the club?

Frequency varies by individual goals and tolerance. The majority benefit from 1–3 sessions per week, while seasoned users may go more often. Always listen to your body.

Is it okay to do after exercise?

Yes, contrast therapy is amongst the best recovery methods for your body. Ensure you’re properly hydrated before entering.

ICE BATH

What are the benefits of ice baths?**

Ice baths can aid in reducing inflammation, accelerating muscle recovery, boosting circulation, and enhancing mental clarity and resilience.

**How long should I stay in an ice bath?**

For beginners, 1–2 minutes is recommended, while experienced users might stay 3–5 minutes. Sessions longer than this should be done with caution and typically under guidance.

What should I expect to feel during an ice bath?

Initially, you may feel a sharp chill, followed by numbing or tingling. Focusing on breathing slowly and deeply helps manage the shock. For example, breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, making your exhales longer than your inhales. After around 45 seconds you will start to relax and enter a state of focus.

Are there any risks to ice bathing?

Potential risks include hypothermia, fainting, or an increased heart rate. Exiting if you feel dizzy or uncomfortable is essential, and using ice baths with caution if you have medical conditions is advised. If you’re a beginner, don’t worry. We got you.

What should I do after my ice bath?**

Dry off, put on warm clothing, and slowly rehydrate. Some people may do light stretching or a warm shower afterward.

What should I do if I feel uncomfortable during the ice bath?**

Exit the bath immediately if you feel lightheaded, overly chilled, or anxious. Staff may be available to assist if needed.
